Throughout much of 2021, two Crossroad's members' longtime friend, Chuck, was in renal failure and his options for a kidney transplant looked grim due to other health issues which made him a high-risk recipient. His wonderful and blessed wife Karen stepped up to donate one of her kidneys, and in what is a minor miracle, she turned out to be a perfect match. Nonetheless, further roadblocks were presented as a local hospital made the decision to not perform the surgery.
Undeterred, Chuck and Karen pursued other options within their home town of Chicago, Illinois. A University Medical Center in Chicago agreed to perform the operation last November. The surgery was performed with donor and recipient doing well. Although Karen was released after 3 weeks, Chuck had to remain in Chicago for 5 months during his recovery. As many of you know, it can get really cold and desolate in Chicago in the wintertime. This was especially true because they were placed at an aging housing complex on the medical campus which Chuck lovingly referred to as “the gulag”. Shortly after surgery two bright, cheery, and warm quilts arrived for Chuck and Karen from the loving members of Crossroad Lutheran Church. Chuck said that within the drafty confines of the gulag, the quilts literally and figuratively were a Godsend and the nicest thing that anyone had done for them throughout this entire ordeal.
Today, Chuck and Karen have both recovered and are happy to be home in Florida. They say they will always be thankful for the thoughtfulness of Crossroad Lutheran Church and their talented and generous quilters who gave hope and comfort and asked for nothing in return. For many years, the quilting team has brought warmth and the spiritual comfort of God’s love, hope and happiness to our church members and their extended family and friends in their time of need.
The Crossroad family would like to thank our Crossroad Quilters most sincerely, and we will continue to donate, support, and appreciate your outstanding prayer quilt ministry.
